Deputy City Attorney/Associate Attorney

The firm is currently recruiting a mid-senior level attorney with a minimum of four (4) years of municipal law experience who enjoys working on a wide range of legal issues to join our collegial and dynamic team to serve as a Deputy City Attorney for the City of Santa Cruz and as an Associate with ABC LAW.

Responsibilities are providing comprehensive legal services in transactional and/or litigation matters including: the Brown Act, CEQA, land use, planning, affordable housing, contracts, construction, constitutional law, Public Records Act, premises liability, eminent domain, code enforcement, etc.

 The ideal candidate will have 4+ years of relevant public agency and/or private firm experience, membership in the California State Bar in good standing, and graduate of an ABA accredited law school. Law Fellow

The firm offers a one-year fellowship for a highly qualified recent law school graduate to assume the responsibility of a junior associate, gain valuable hands-on experience, and have direct client contact. 

Law fellows will work closely with and receive mentorship from firm attorneys and have a great opportunity to learn how to practice in all areas of municipal and public entity law, including both transactional and litigation matters. Transactional matters may include attendance at public meetings, drafting ordinances and resolutions, performing legal research, reviewing and drafting contracts, and providing advice regarding the myriad of legal issues public entities encounter on a daily basis, including the Brown Act, Public Records Act, Political Reform Act, CEQA, and land use. Litigation responsibilities may include preparation of pleadings, drafting discovery requests and responses, and performing legal research in all areas of litigation, including dangerous condition, civil rights, constitutional law, and code enforcement. The firm also represents private clients in business, employment, estate planning, construction, and real estate matters; the law fellow may also be involved in working in these practice areas. 

Applicants should have a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, a strong academic background, and excellent writing and communication skills.  

The firm expects the Law Fellow will have taken the California Bar exam either before joining the firm or within a few months of starting the fellowship.

Administrative Assistant

The firm is currently recruiting for an Administrative Assistant to join our collegial and dynamic team. Working in close collaboration with the office manager, paralegals, and attorneys, the Administrative Assistant, provides administrative support to the administrative and legal team.

Administrative Assistant will perform receptionist duties such as receiving and routing calls, greeting and assisting clients in a professional manner. Assist office manager in keeping operations of the firm organized and running efficiently. Under the supervision of paralegals, assist with maintaining case files; manage, organize, and maintain records in paper or electronic filing systems. Assist paralegals with file and records management related to Public Records Act requests and subpoenas. Perform legal administrative duties, such as maintaining office and legal calendars, scheduling appointments, assisting with complex word processing, document formatting, and preparing case binders for court. Compose and prepare routine correspondence and communicate with clients in person, over the phone, and via email. Process receipt, return, and/or delivery of legal and other documents to clients. Assist with photocopying and scanning projects. Communicate with vendors to order office supplies; schedule maintenance and facilities upkeep; maintain professional appearance of office and perform other duties as assigned.

 We expect the Administrative Assistant to have excellent verbal, writing, and computer skills. Have the ability to work in a professional environment that requires a high level of confidentiality. Must be able to adapt and multi-task, work efficiently and competently with a high degree of accuracy. Must pay meticulous attention to detail in all work tasks. Be organized and focused. Motivated to learn with a positive attitude. Have the ability to follow instructions, adapt to shifting priorities, and meet deadlines. Work collaboratively with co-workers as part of a team.

Applicants should possess competency in computer skills and proficiency with Outlook, Microsoft Office 365 products, including Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. Strong proficiency in English: verbal, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Applicants may have any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Experience may include relevant paralegal, receptionist, legal assistant, and/or records experience is preferred but not required.
